What a Holiday!

January 3, 2011

It was the first Monday of the year.

Around 9-ish, I got out of the elevator in the 5th floor --- as usual. The first unusual thing I noticed that morning was that the main door leading to our office's reception area is closed. Hmmm that's pretty unusual for a Monday morning; well, unless the receptionist took a leave and no one can cover for her.

I went through the back door as usual and felt that the office was unusually quiet and cold --- it was a ghost town! I could feel the silence. Oh ok, so EVERYONE decided to take a leave! Then I saw my boss in his room, facing his computer. Good! So, at least I'm not the only one who decided to not take a leave!

Time to start the new year right! Turned on my computer, unlock my filing cabinets, and took out my eyeglasses and mobile phone from my bag and laid it on my table AS USUAL. A few minutes has passed when my boss approached --- "What are you doing here?," he said. "Did you forget something? Are you just gonna pick up something or are you working? You have work to do?". I didn't know why he was asking me all these things! I didn't forget anything, and no I'm not here to just pick up something. I'm here to work! Then my boss' next words made me red, made me cover my face with my hands as I feel my hot face and laugh in disbelief at what I heard --- "Don't you know it's a holiday?! No one told you?!". I was sooo embarassed and I think, for a moment, my boss tried to hold back his amusement.

After I recovered from my embarassment, I felt worried as I thought of what I am supposed to do for the next 8 hours. I mean, now that I know it's a holiday, I feel bad and not in the mood to work anymore all of a sudden. Tony and I carpool and Tony has to work. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes for him to go to my office. There's no way he can pick me up, drop me to the train station, have a decent lunch and make it to his work on time. Worse, when I saw the train schedule, I thought that going home earlier than Tony by taking the train is not an option anymore. It's too much hassle.

I was ready to stay in the office until 6PM. I can always find work or things to do. All this time, Tony and I were chatting via Gmail. He would suggest things I could do like look up for furnitures, appliances and other things that can fill up our new home. Then....my very loving, thoughtful and sympathetic husband thought of picking me up and dropping me at the mall, which is near his place of work. Brilliant!

11 AM passed, then 12 PM. We agreed we're gonna have lunch together, maybe in my office. Then I got a message from my husband, "Sweetie, I was called by the owner of the law firm who asked me to do something for him." Then 1 PM passed. I'm developing a headache now; I was getting hungrier by the minute and feeling light headed. A little before 1:30 PM, I decided to heat up my chicken sopas before dropping a message to my husband telling him not to bother picking me up because it's too much trouble and because it's too late anyways. Coming from the pantry, I laid down my warmed chicken sopas on the table. Ready to eat and ready to drop a message to my husband. Then my phone rang. "Sweetie, I'm here at your office parking space" It was a little past 1:30 PM now. He came! I didn't expect him to be there! But there he was. When I went inside the car, I can sense he was in a rush, conscious of time, and knowing that he's on a very tight schedule! Oh my husband! I was willing to stay in the office and I didn't get the chance to tell him...

We found a parking lot near the mall entrance and then raced to the foodcourt. He let me order 2 corn dogs for him while he rushed to the restroom. Then when we were seated, I began to eat my still warm chicken sopas while he ate one of his corn dogs in 5 minutes. My husband just had 5 minutes of actual lunch time...5 minutes

Before he left me, he said "Shop til you forget your frustration on missing your holiday. Spare no expense" --- I felt his sincerity, of how much he wanted me to feel happy, of how much my happiness mean more to him than money. And so that's what I exactly did!!! I shopped until I feel like I've shopped the whole day! What a holiday! :-)
